What is Coily hair?
Coily hair, or Type 4 hair, is a texture characterized by tight, spiral-shaped curls or coils. This hair type is common among people of African, Afro-Caribbean, and African-American descent, but it can be found in individuals of various ethnic backgrounds as well. Coily hair is known for its natural resilience and the ability to retain moisture, making it less prone to dryness than other hair types.
Coily hair is further categorized into two subtypes:
Type 4A: This subtype has well-defined, S-shaped curls with a diameter similar to a crochet needle. It tends to be fragile and can experience shrinkage when it dries.
Type 4B: Type 4B hair forms tight, zigzag patterns and tends to have a more coiled and densely packed texture. It may appear less defined when it comes to curl patterns.
Type 4C: Type 4C hair is characterized by extremely tight, small coils or zigzags that are sometimes hard to distinguish. It often appears that there is no defined curl pattern and can experience significant shrinkage.
Coily hair is versatile and can be styled in numerous ways, from natural afros and twist-outs to protective styles like braids and cornrows. Proper care and maintenance for coily hair often involve moisturizing with hydrating products, using sulfate-free shampoos, and avoiding excessive heat styling, which can cause damage. Regular deep conditioning treatments are also essential to maintain the health and strength of coily hair.
